Bill Howe Techs Mentoring San Diego’s Youth
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday seven young adults from the Andrew Chapman Mentorship Program come to Bill Howe Plumbing, Inc. to shadow our San Diego Plumbing technicians.
The Andrew Chapman Mentorship Program (ACMP) is a non-profit program in San Diego dedicated to providing a comprehensive mentoring program of job training and skill development to assist troubled youth in San Diego and help them become productive and independent individuals. The program was founded in 2008 by Andrew Chapman who is also a plumbing technician at Bill Howe Plumbing.
It is with the support of Bill Howe Plumbing that ACMP is able to continue to mentor the youth of San Diego. This on-the-job training allows these students to get valuable insight into the day in the life of a plumber while learning a valuable trade. The students have been paired up with a Bill Howe technician who not only teaches them techniques within the field, but also about customer interaction and the importance of being professional and always communicating with your customers.
It’s important to our company that we give back to the San Diego Community and to continuously raise the bar for the plumbing industry. With this program we hope that these young adults see how a successful and ethical company is run and if they go on to work for a San Diego plumbing company, they will look for a company with our same high standards.

Drawing Contest Winner Recognized at Heart Beach Ball
Winner of the “Howe” Healthy is Your Heart Drawing Contest, Summer Stewart, was recognized at the American Heart Association’s Heart Beach Ball at the Hotel Del Coronado on June 11th. Accompanied by her father, the 12-year-old was announced to the attendees of the Ball and her drawing was featured on the poster (shown below) and in the event program.
The night was filled with speakers from the American Heart Association with inspirational stories, a live auction, dancing and of course some generous donations to help raise money for the American Heart Association’s goal: by 2020, the AHA/ASA will improve the cardiovascular health of all American by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20 percent.

The Benefits of “Spring Cleaning” Your Water Heater
At Bill Howe Plumbing, we know that performing annual maintenance on your water heater is extremely important and can be easily done. Over the course of the life of a water heater, sediment builds up at the bottom of the tank. When the sediment builds up, the water heater has to use more energy to heat through the sediment and then heat the water. Additionally, the buildup takes up space within your water heater, reducing the amount of hot water your tank has room to hold. Flushing out your water heater will also improve the quality of your water.
The Process:
Flushing out your water heater is a straight forward process. First, shut off the water inlet to the heater. Then drain the water from the tank – you can do this a few different ways, the most efficient is by hooking up a garden hose to the hose bib at the bottom of the tank. Open the hose bib and let the tank drain. Once it’s drained, partially fill the water about a quarter of the way. Do this a few times and then you can fill up your water heater again.
Ventilation on Newer Water Heaters:
Water heaters that have been installed in the past eight years or less have been made with a vent that is located at the bottom of the water heater. That vent is used to bring in oxygen needed for the heating process. These vents can become filled with lint and debris and should be vacuumed out at least once a year. This can be done using a standard Shop-vac. The vent may need to be vacuumed out more frequently, depending on the location and environment of the water heater, i.e. water heaters in laundry rooms will need more attention than other locations.
Extending the Life of Your Water Heater:
Anode rods are the key ingredient in determining how many years your water heater will last. These rods, made of magnesium and structured around a steel core wire, are secured from the top of the water heater and run inside the length of the tank. The rods work in a sacrificial way in that corrosion will happen on the rods before the steel surface of the tank. By checking the condition of your anode rods and if necessary, replacing the corroded anode rods, you can extend the life of your water heater.
